What are teeth whitening strips and how are they used?

To all those who are looking for the various options of teeth whitening products and procedures, I find the information from Animated-Teeth which may help you to choose. Remember that it is always good to know how each teeth whitening product works because you invest in them. Compare notes and prices, weigh the effectiveness and if at all possible, ask your dentist for recommendations.

What are teeth whitening strips and how are they used?

Teeth whitening strips are thin, flexible pieces of plastic (polyethylene) that have been coated on one side with a thin film of hydrogen peroxide bleaching agent. As opposed to other at-home teeth whitening systems where a whitener is placed into a tray, in this case the strip itself is the delivery system for the whitener and the precise dosing of the teeth bleaching agent is administered by the manufacturer.

When they are used, whitening strips are positioned across the user’s teeth and then gently pressed into place so to create maximum contact between the whitener and each tooth being treated. Whitening strips kits contain two different shaped strips. Half of the kit’s strips are designed to fit across the user’s upper teeth and the other half are shaped so to fit across their lower teeth.

Teeth Whitening Toothpaste

Whitening toothpastes.

Do you know how many types of teeth whitening toothpastes are out there? It is really a lot. Recently, more and more brands are coming up with teeth whitening toothpaste. I have tried Colgate Teeth Whitening and unfortunately, the only it does for my teeth is to make it so sensitive, I couldn’t even finish the tube.

All these teeth whitening toothpaste are going for less than $10 a tube.

Crest has seven varieties of toothpaste whiteners. C

Meanwhile, Colgate has eight.

Does teeth whitening toothpaste works? This is what the experts say :

“It depends on the active ingredient,” says Laura Kelly, president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Only some brands contain a peroxide, and those that do have very low concentrations—usually 1 to 2 percent. That’s enough to remove surface stains and give teeth a good outer cleaning but not enough to make tooth shades whiter. “They’re more effective at maintaining your shine after you’ve undergone stronger in-office or at-home whitening treatments,” says Kenton Ross, a spokesperson for the Academy of General Dentistry.

Braces - What are some of the options?

I must thank my lucky stars that I have a perfect set of teeth without needing braces. And double thanks that none of my kids have teeth that need braces. However, I notice an increase in people needing braces. I heard that they are rather expensive and the whole procedure is rather uncomfortable too.

Lately, I saw many eye-catching braces and even the model search reality show has one participant who uses braces. So, what are some of the options available for those who need braces?

I found this article from USNews which listed three types of braces :

Clear aligners. Custom made for each set of teeth, the removable, translucent, plastic trays marketed as Invisalign afford a hushed way to get a smile worth smiling about. But they’re not for everyone. Best for fixing minor issues like twisted or crowded teeth, they can’t necessarily beat bite problems, some experts say.

Lingual braces. Attaching to the backs of teeth, not the fronts, these braces are discreet. They’re also kinder to the lips and cheeks than forward-facing braces, but they may instead irritate the tongue.

Tooth-colored brackets. Even traditional braces are becoming more unnoticeable thanks to brackets that visually blend in. Made of ceramic or plastic, they make the “metal mouth” look a thing of the past. But the new brackets can be more brittle—not to mention pricier—than the metallic kind, George says, and may be prone to fractures, requiring replacement.

Mylie Cyrus aka Hannah Montana smile makeover with whiter teeth

My children love Hannah Montana. Even the youngest one can tell me what time, which channel and on which day Hannah Montana comes on air. So, Mylie Cyrus is like the latest teens’ idol. Boys love her. Girls want to emulate her.

I read on this Plastic Surgery site that Mylie Cyrus has probably gone for some teeth whitening. I borrow the photo from the site MakeMeHeal to show you the difference teeth whitening does to a person. Hannah Montana is so much prettier and so much more alive with a set of whiter teeth, isn’t it?

Quoted by MakeMeHeal.com :

Make Me Heal has observed that Miley’s smile has gotten significantly whiter and her teeth noticeably more straight and even in the past few months. Michael D. Kosdon, D.D.S., a Burbank, Calif.-area dentist has also noted the transformation, saying, “It looks as though she’s had some porcelain veneers put on her front teeth. And her small incisors appear to have been covered to make them look longer and more balanced with the rest of her mouth.” Veneers are often just the starting point for stars wanting to improve their appearance.

Well, if young stars like her have begin these transformation, I guess more young girls and boys too will be caught up in this quest for whiter teeth. I bet the dentists are all very happy with this trend. Laser teeth whitening and other method of teeth whitening is big business, I tell you.

Obsession over teeth whitening can leads to blue teeth

While stumbling around, I found this comment made by a dentist. Everyone wants to get white teeth like those Hollywood celebrities. Everyone wants to get a piece of the sparkling, white teeth. But when one is obessesed with it and carry it too far, do you know that we can end up with blue teeth? Using the zoom process, i.e. 25% hydrogen peroxide to bleach the teeth, one can get very visible results. And when you are not satisfied, the dentist will give you a tray of DIY teeth whitening and you can carry on doing it at home.

But warned, the dentist :

Obsessing about a flawless smile can have its side effects.

“Sensitivity of your teeth and you can have gum irritation,” says Dr. Simon.

“The hydrogen peroxide can leach onto the gums and turn your gums a white color but that doesn’t mean it’s going to have an irreversible effect.”

Dr. Simon says no matter what avenue you take to whitening perfection, if you overdo it your teeth could take on a bluish tint.

“Most of the blueness people see are because their teeth are getting so whitened there’s trans-illumination of the light showing through the enamel,” he says.
