Teeth whitening: Over the counter vs dentist

One of the question many people ask is how are over the counter teeth whitening products work compared to the treatment from the professional dentists? Well obviously the price of those celebrity sexy teeth whitening are much cheaper than a session at the dentist. However, dentists are professional trained to ensure that your teeth are not damaged in the process.

Do OTC whitening products compare to the results you can get from the whitening trays provided from a dentist? My dentist gave me the options of trays or laser whitening, but I’m wondering if I can find similar results using OTC products.

  4. Your dentist can provide you with a bleach of a much higher concentration the you can get OTC. Think of it as a cap full vs a cup full to bleach your clothes…it just depends on how “dirty” they are. I would not recommend laser or zoom bleaching. Third party research is still being done and it is indicating possible damage to the nerves. This is due to the increase in tooth temperature from the light source. It’s a catch 22, the only way to up the effects of the bleach is to add heat, but heat damages nerves. “They” say that the flashes of intense light aren’t harmful because they are only 6 nanoseconds. I finally got in touch with the scientists that did the testing and they told me that the max. tooth temp recorded was in excess of 900 degrees. Until research can confirm that this does not cause damage on a cellular level, I am holding off.
